QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute

QIMR Berghofer has a long history in the study of infectious diseases since it was founded over 70 years ago. Today the Institute has diverse research activities (including cancer, mental health and chronic disorders), all underpinned by great strengths in immunology, cell and molecular biology, population health, genetics and bio-computing. For more information visit www.qimrberghofer.edu.au.

The laboratories that contribute to QIMR Berghofer’s Infectious Diseases Program study how a range of important pathogenic organisms cause illness, search for better ways to diagnose and treat them, and develop vaccines to prevent infections. A major emphasis is on infections that disproportionately affect people living in the developing world and tropical regions. Pathogens studied include mosquito-borne viruses, bacteria, parasites, such as intestinal protozoa, the malaria parasite and scabies, as well as viruses, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus.

The Program continues to focus on strong collaborations between clinicians and researchers from both within QIMR Berghofer and across other institutes, the Herston Health Campus, which is one of the largest health campuses in Australia, as well as working with pharmaceutical companies to develop patented therapeutic technologies that improve the health of many.

The EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network

Australia was the first Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). EMBL is an international research organisation that fosters excellence by providing a highly collaborative environment that benefits the research of all its scientists, whether at graduate, post-doctoral or group leader level. A key initiative of the associate membership is the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network, a partnership of Australian research institutions which provide long-term funded, research-only positions allowing early to mid-career researchers to pursue ambitious research programs. QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institution recently established a new node of the Partner Laboratory Network. For more information about EMBL Australia visit www.emblaustralia.org.
