About QIMR Berghofer:

QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and complex disorders. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and support staff.

About the team:

The applicant will join a large international team of tumor immunologists and cancer biologists (>20 staff and students). QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute provides world class facilities for histology, flow cytometry, Imaging and animal experiments.

Role Purposes / Responsibilities:

The applicant is expected to have a strong track record in animal research, and immunology. The SRA will work in an interactive team comprised of group leader, Dr. Bill Dougall, Senior Research Officers and other RAs. The primary objectives are to develop in vitro assays using human immune cells (T-cells and dendritic cells) as well as humanized mouse models of cancer to study novel cancer immunotherapy. The following duties will apply:

  • Cell culture of primary human immune cells isolated from peripheral blood
  • Culturing a variety of mouse and human cancer cell lines
  • Development of humanized mouse model by reconstitution of human T-cells expanded using autologous dendritic cells
  • Administering immunotherapeutic agents (i.v., i.p., s.c. injections)
  • Immunophenotyping of tumors and lymphoid organs (flow cytometry and histology)

About You:

The successful Applicant is expected to have technical knowledge and experience in:

  • Cell culture
  • Animal handling and experimentation
  • Flow cytometry
  • Experiences in basic microscopy and histology or advanced molecular biology techniques (eg CRISPR/Cas9, RNAseq) are preferred.
  • Team player with strong people skills.
  • Ability to work independently but also in a collaborative manner with local teams.

This is a one-year appointment with strong prospect of renewal. The salary level will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience. The successful candidate can expect to commence the position anytime up to October 15, 2017.
